Madison Bans Elective Declawing of Cats

If only the rest of the nation would follow suit...

Several cities have been outlawing the cruel practice of elective cat declawing, and Madison, Wisconsin just added themselves to the list. This is so important because declawing cats doesn't just strip them of any protection they have should they ever get lost or abandoned by their owner, it's also incredibly painful for the animals.

Many people assume that declawing is a painless procedure, much like getting your nails clipped. Unfortunately it's quite the opposite and involves an actual amputation. The cats' "knuckles" are removed in order to prevent claws from growing, and it's often done in an inhumane fashion. It has zero benefits for the cat, unless it's performed for a medical purpose, such as ridding the pet of a tumor.

Cats need to scratch, so if you can't cope with that, don't get a cat. You can help your cat by providing plenty of items they can scratch, like towers, cat houses and boxes. If you would like tips on how to get your cat to use these or have some to share, post in the chat!

When You Name Your Cat Dr. Lecter

Is he really a psychopath, though?

Lots of people refer to their cats as psychopaths. Is it really that far of a stretch? Cats knock off our cups while looking us dead in the eye, deliberately disobey us and act up in ways we'd never see our dogs do (at least, not in front of us!). Now scientists have a questionnaire you can fill out to determine whether or not your cat is truly a psychopath!

You can find the survey online to do with your cat in mind. I am a bit afraid to find out whether or not I'm living with three soft psychopaths who would probably kill me if they had the chance, myself. Given the fact that cats are probably controlling us anyway and who knows if we really love them or if it's toxo mind control... I really don't think I want to know!

How about you? Do you think your cat is a psychopath? Will you be taking the test to find out? Share your thoughts in the chat.

Weird Cat News This Week

So many weird cats and their humans!

If you search for cat videos this week, you might find some nefarious information. And that's just one of the many weird cat stories in the news this week! Apparently videos and photos of cute cats are being used to spread misinformation online by various groups of people, so beware if that cat flushing a toilet is captioned with some conspiracy theory.

A woman was caught trying to breastfeed a hairless cat on a plane this week. The poor cat was yowling and the woman refused to place the cat back in its carrier when asked to do so repeatedly.

Around a third of people in the world have been infected with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite that cats spread, but now researchers are discovering that the parasite is being spread among wildlife.

Cute Kitty Moments This Week

Share yours in the chat!

Whether it's more stories in the news lately or just an abundance of floof on TikTok, the cute cats are really out and proud this week. My own cats have even been especially adorable. I took a picture of my floofiest girl posing like a regal queen on the back of my desk chair just this morning.

Jennifer Garner posted a video of herself bathing her cat, Moose, and these two "respectful" cats who fight light gentlemen have the Internet in stitches. Cats snuggling up in containers looking like liquid is also all the rage right now, and I can confirm that If She Fits, She Sits.

What cat cuteness have you witnessed this week? Share any videos or photos in the chat!

Covid Vaccines for Cats

Is it necessary?

As animal advocates ask for Covid-19 vaccines for zoo animals and pets, experts say that the vaccines, while developed for animals, may not always be necessary. We've seen zoo animals sadly pass away from Covid, and it turns out that the vaccine they are given was originally developed for companion animals--dogs--in the first place. The reason it's not being made into a priority is an encouraging one: our companion animals aren't as affected by the disease as we are.

Dogs and cats aren't getting Covid at the rate we might expect, and those who are aren't spreading it to humans or even having nearly as many complications from it as other animals. Some experts say that the risk among them is so low that a vaccine for them may not even be worth it. That said, there's been less than two years to analyze this information, and who knows how many pets may have Covid and their owners don't even know? Many pet owners only go to the vet for emergencies, after all.

Would you support a vaccine for your cat? Do you think it's necessary? Share your thoughts in the chat.

Cats Use Their Ears To Spy On Us

It makes total sense, really.

Is it surprising to you that your track probably tracks you with its ears as you move around your house, creating a mental map of your movements? Yeah, me either. Mine know what drawer I'm going to before I get there, hoping for a treat from the same drawer I keep other items in.

In this new study, cats were found to be tracking their owner movements based largely on their voices, but in a home like mine where I work from home and have days where I don't even leave the house, I bet tracking movements and other sounds would be pretty easy for a cat to do. What I'm interested in is what they do with this information. My money is on plotting our murder. Why else would they try to trip us 30 times a day?

How well do you think your cat tracks your wherabouts? Does your cat follow you around or seem to know what you're doing by sound? Share your experiences in the chat.

The Great (Or Not-So-Great) Cat Swap

Would you do this?

A man is getting a lot of heat for swapping his cat in secret, without telling his wife, in order to get a better-behaved pet in the mix. Six years ago, he got rid of his wife's hissing, scratching cat, brought home an "identical" one and they've since gotten married without her even knowing. He swears it was because the previous cat wasn't one that could be tamed any better but most people don't think it was a very kind thing to do, to say the least.

At least now the man feels very guilty over the decision, especially when his wife calls the cat the former cat's name and talks about how much better it became living with them. He ended up taking the first cat to a shelter and was anxious about her realizing it. If she finds out, I wonder what it would do to their relationship?

Have you been in a similar experience before? Do you think he should tell her?

Halloween Cat House Review: Treat Boutique Candy Shop

My cats like it so far!

We used some coupons to get one of the Target Treat Boutique Candy Shop cat scratchers this year and I just finished putting it together yesterday. So far, my cats like it, but they don't seem to love it the way they loved the previous one we had. It's much bigger, with a double-decker patio, so I'm wondering if I did something different in last year's box. Maybe I added catnip!

Pumpkin, my oldest yet most playful cat, wanted to play in the box it came in more than anything else. Sally and Gizmo, my other two, have lounged in it more than they've scratched so far. The box is bright and pretty, but I think last year's design was a bit more intricate. This one was also harder to put together and doesn't stay together as long. Last year's stayed together all year while this one's top likes to jostle loose fairly easily.

This model also cost much more than last year's. It's bigger, but not necessarily better. I think I preferred last year's model staying together and being assembled much more easily to this more expensive one, but I do think it's pretty.

Did you get a Halloween cat scratcher this year? Share which one you have in the chat.

Cat Wears Glasses To Support Kids

Truffles is a truly special feline

Support animals come in all shapes and sizes. We normally hear about support and service dogs, which are fantastic, but there are also plenty of cats providing comfort and support for people. Take Truffles, the glasses-wearing cat! Truffles "works" with her optometrist mom in helping kids accept and celebrate their glasses. As a kid who hated to wear my glasses, I'd have to say that it would be very comforting to see a cat with them on, too.

Many of the kids who visit Truffles have other worries plaguing them, too, from eye surgeries and other uncomfortable treatments, like patching. Truffles even patches along with the kids, covering one side of her glasses with a patch to match the patients. Dr. Crull, her owner, says that she's truly magical, and we don't doubt it. How cool to have a support buddy like Truffles by your side.

What other cats have you heard about when it comes to service and support? Share their stories and links in the chat.

Caracal Cat on the Loose

The danger of owning a wild animal...

Every day I see caracals and other exotic animals on TikTok or Instagram and think about how beautiful they are, how cool it seems to have one living with you--and how I would never want that responsibility. Case in point? An African caracal cat has escaped its home and police have warned citizens to not approach the animal and call them for assistance should they see it.

What's really concerning is that this is one of three cats that escaped--and that they've escaped a few times before! I wouldn't be able to keep an animal like that, given the danger it presents, but I'm also not so sure the owner should, either. Wild animals aren't pets and if you can't protect your neighborhood from your pets, you really shouldn't have them.

What do you think? Have you ever owned an exotic pet or known someone who has? Share your experiences in the chat.
