For years, we let our cats roam around our dead-end street. As a child, my cats always roamed our three-street neighborhood pretty safely so I just kept doing it with my cats as an adult. We only stopped because neighbors complained about our cats in their yards, but others had told me I should keep my cats inside for their own safety.
It's true that outdoor cats face more risks in terms of diseases, getting hit by cars and other unfortunate incidents. However, my cats also like to kill voles, snakes and mice, keeping me pest-free. They also really enjoy being outdoors, but I'll admit that they do also kill birds. Now that my cats have been indoor only for a few years, they've gotten fatter and still sometimes beg to go outside.
Do you think cats should be kept inside? Why or why not?
