The Best Cat Myths

A couple of days ago, my trio of cats lined up to look outside one window before I had a chance to open the other windows. It was adorable to see them lined up, all on different levels, but also a bit surreal. I referred to them as cat sidhe searching for prey, and who knows? Maybe they are.

Cats is in Theaters

While I haven't seen Cats yet, a friend sent me a bunch of reviews that show a widely mixed bag between critics, who largely despise the film so far, and audiences, who like but don't love it. The funny thing is that many people who hated it still actually had fun watching the movie, which is kind of baffling. If you liked it, shouldn't you rate it better? We're so focused on what's "good" that we forget that simply being enjoyable is "good," too.

"My Cat From Hell" returns!

Summer is saved!

In the midst of a long drought of summer re-runs, one bright spot is the return of a new season of Animal Planet's breakout hit, "My Cat From Hell." This show stars Jackson Galaxy, the tattooed, pierced, oddly-bearded, biker-looking dude who is - contrary to appearances - and isn't that a lesson for you - a kind, sensitive, and empathetic cat behavioral specialist.

In the same way that "The Dog Whisperer" IS Cesar Milan, "My Cat From Hell" IS Jackson Galaxy. He literally makes the show. Galaxy's humor, intuition, and ability to assess a situation from a cat's point of view is as unique as it is fascinating. I recently found his blog, jacksongalaxy.com, via his Twitter feed. (Animal Planet promotes the "My Cat From Hell" section of its website, which is somewhat paltry. If you are interested in the show, check out Jackson's own site!) His seven minute video "The Politics of Litter" will teach you more about cat psychology than an entire shelf full of useless conventional cat books.

3 New Cat Shows on Animal Planet

Animal Planet seems to be FINALLY shifting away from its ultra-lurid phase of shows like "When Animals Attack" and "20 Most Vicious Animal Attacks" and "Parasites That Will Make You Want To Wash Your Hands" and "I Got Bit." (Those last two aren't the shows' real names, but I know you know which ones I mean.)

In particular, Animal Planet has started three new cat-related shows which cat lovers will definitely want to check out!

Ikea: Herding Cats -- the Making of a Viral Video

Ikea UK created a new commercial, featuring 100 house cats, many from employees, that were released into an Ikea store, in Wembley, England, at night after customers had left. These cats are not stunt animals, and the point was to see how, and where, in the Ikea store, loaded with Ikea home furnishings, would make themselves "at home." They had the owners on site, five camera teams (including an infra red camera), vets and professional cat-wranglers, all on hand, and they blocked off parts of the store. The music in the commercial is "Pianni," by Mara Carlyle. It's quite interesting to watch the difference between the cats as individuals, and the extreme difference in behavior between the adults cats, and the kittens. There's a second video embedded below with a behind-the-scenes look at the actual filming.
