Since your cat is an older one it's probably just arthritis, just like people get. Also, since its a purebred Maincoon it could be something with the breed. I personally have never owned a maincoon and don't know much about the breed, but I'm sure it's something in the bloodlines.

Last winter my 10 year old male cat started displaying pretty much the same symptoms you describe.
The vets were able to determine that he had not suffered any trauma, but couldn't come up with a definitive diagnosis.

My regular vet referred me to a specialist who seconded her opinion that the only way to either treat or definiteively diagnosis the problem would be an extraordinarily expensive procedure such as an MRI or spinal cord surgery.

They both suggested, that the only real hope was to assume that the problem was simply some sort of inflamation of the spinal cord. Such a problem can be treated with drugs. This didn't work out for me, but it might for you. I recommend getting your cat to a vet quickly. Good luck!
