cat licks hair off? Please help

My cat has been licking the hair off his stomach and legs for about a year now. It all started when we moved into a house that previously had cats. He is about 10 years old and has never done this before. I took him to the vet and he got a cortazone shot. This did not work. I read that he might be lonely so I bought a kitten. This worked great for about a month and the hair started coming off again. The vet then recommended I change his cat food. Once again I thought I found the cure but it only lasted about a month. Now he is bald on the stomach and legs and going for the front legs. I’m lost, I guess I might have to try a cat prozac or something. I’d appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Help :)

Hi!

If you've been to the vet and your cat is healthy I think its probably due to stress. Is there another cat that's bothering your cat? Or a new family member? If so that's probably the cause. There's a number of things you can do depending on the situation if that is the case.  Hope that helps!

Hi,
One of our cats has the same problem. Our vet diagnosed an emotional cause and prescribed both Prozac and Valium. This did help while we continued treatment. But the Valium caused such drowsiness ( and goofiness! ) that we discontinued treatment 3 years ago. She still has the same problem but is otherwise healthy and happy. And the bald belly just adds to her character : ) . You may want to discuss drug treatments with your vet. But from our experience with the Valium, we don't recommend it unless as a last resort. Hope this helps.

My cat, Petunia, a domestic

My cat, Petunia, a domestic short hair has been licking and actually PULLY her hair out for over a year. I brought her to the vet, they gave her a steroid shot, and then a few weeks later put her on anti depressents. Neither stopped Tuna from pulling her hair out. I purchased a dog sweater, so now she can only pull out the hair not covered by the coat.

There is nothing wrong with her per the Vet. She is 15 years old and the vet only says if it bothering me, to put her down. She is NOT suffering, but looks strange with bald patches.

The behaviour started about a year ago, we had a house fire and a fireman stepped on Tuna as she ran out the front door. I think it is just trauma.

She eats well, and seems happy. I just get odd looks from neighbors who think I am mistreating her. I am not.
