my cat always prepares his seat before he lays down. He places his claws into the pillow furniture and proceeds to claw it for about a minute then rest himself down and sleeps. How in the world can I stop him? Should i declaw him?

Don't declaw your cat!!! It isn't necessary. Your cat is acting normal when it is kneeding your furniture. Teach your cat that he is not allowed on the furniture that you want to protect, but don't forget to give the cat his or her own place that is comfortable to sleep. You can teach the cat not to get on furniture by saying no as it is getting ready to jump up, and/or by using a spray bottle filled with water to squirt the cat when it jumps onto the items you don't want him or her to kneed.
If you spray lemon or any citrus smelling compound you will usually turn cat away from that AREA.
if your cat is not to old, try getting it declawed. Or else, I think you can get something at the pet store that smells appauling to the cat and makes it stay away from whatever you put it on. Or if you don't want to do that, you can buy it its very own bed at a pet store. Well I hope that helped you at least a little bit. smee

When you cat was a baby thats what they did to there mother when they were being feed. its called needing. You shouldn't declaw your cat just for being happy. When they need ( i don't know if that is how you spell it) it means that they are happy and remember that they are with their mother
My cat used to do the same thing. I have recently started clipping her nails down and that seems to help somewhat. I think that once your cat get more used to her chosen sleeping areas, they will need less 'adjusting' before she can sleep there. My cat does not seem to knead things unless it is a new blanket....or sweatshirt or sweater or pants...on the furniture.
