Just looking for info regarding 2 indoor males, 1 is 7 yrs old and one is 8 mos old.  Both sleep with me and my husband.  The younger incessantly kneeds me and sucks and licks my arm and sleeps in my lap.  In addition breaking things and stealing stuff and generally wrecking with my posessions.  The older male grooms the younger and then they ignore each other for the most part. The older cat still sleeps in my lap and in bed, but his behavior has changed.  Until I got the old cat (at 5 weeks) I had never had cats always had dogs, so raised the kitten as a dog.  Now with the younger cat I am have issues with both.  Can someone direct me in cat sociogolgy?????????

Letting your Cat pick your Mate?

So I started dating this guy a little over a month ago, and the biggest surprise thus far in our relationship is how well he gets along with the cats in my household. I know that there are people out there that truly are "cat people", and it reinforces my belief that animals, especially cats, are able to key in on whether someone is a good or bad person. It seems as though I have noticed a few areas in which my cats try to gauge whether or not my new beau is worthy of their attention. Those are a) his playfulness b) his attentiveness and c) his ability to be trained. As much as you may be thinking that it is I who is sizing my new boyfriend within these categories, but I assure you... really, it's just my cats.

Halloween + Crazy Cat People = Cats in Pathetic Costumes

Crazy Cat LadyCrazy Cat LadyBy far, the craziest breed of pet owner has to be the feline fanatic. I mean, what other pet owners have their own class of crazy attributed to them(as well as their own action figure!)? And Crazy Cat Lady Syndrome is no joke!

What's really baffling is that in their obsession with their cats, Crazy Cat People will do the weirdest things to these innocent, yet useless animals. Don't believe me? Check out these cats in costume. These cats don't look amused or cute in the costumes made by, or picked by their misguided and possibly unstable owners.

What I've Learned About Cats

Both my mother and my brother were allergic to cats when I was growing up. Consequently, I never spent much time around the animals. Recently I moved into a new apartment with a friend who has two cats, so I've started to learn about them in something of a crash course. Here's what I've learned about Felis Catus since switching residences.

Show Your Cat How Much You Care

Taking care of cats is pretty simple, right? You change the litter box, you feed them every day, and you take them to the vet, and give them a little time and affection. Unlike many dogs, most cats are generally pretty self-reliant. You give them the basics, and they’re pretty much on their own.

But that doesn’t mean that Princess and Boots don’t want your attention. No matter how aloof or snobbish any cat may seem, deep down he or she loves you and wants your affection. (That’s not to say that some cats aren’t open about it in the first place; there are plenty of loving, purr-able cats who aren’t shy when it comes to demanding attention!)

To many cat owners, cats are members of the family. So why not treat them as such? Here are some things you can do to help show your cat how much you love her. Read more

Back in the days when I was a useless drain on society (re: college), I visited an academic advisor for general education requirements. Unlike Major advisors, general education types got shoved into windowless corners like a shameful secret. In the sub-basement of one of the Humanities buildings I met with this woman to discuss the progress of my education, only to find myself surrounded with cat paraphernalia in frightening density. The wall was lined with cat mugs, snow globes, photos, plush dolls and office supplies. For some reason, this behavior still isn't considered a sign of mental imbalance. Read more

Cat Intelligence Called into Question

Cute CatCute CatDo cats have a learning disability that dogs don't have? One researcher won't put it in so many words, but her research into the friendly felines has demonstrated that "cats do not understand cause and effect connections between objects".  Her experiment was not high-tech at all- she basically baited a string with tasty treats (fish and a biscuit), and placed them out of reach  to see "if the cats could work out that pulling on the string would pull the treat closer."

She used three strings: "a single baited string, two parallel strings where only one was baited, and two crossed strings where only one was baited."

Does your cat chat? Do you know what it is trying to tell you? Perhaps you need to take a moment to read through this article and learn more about cat chatter. As with all things in life, there is usually more than meets the eye; or the ears in this case.

Three Easy Ways to Decipher Your Cat's Language
Figuring out what your cat is trying to tell you is actually rather easily done. Know what all of the cat chat is about by simply following these three simple suggestions.
1. Higher pitched, desperate meows typically relate to hunger, attention needs and desires for outdoor adventures (if your cat is allowed outside), as well as, “My litter box needs to be changed, dang it!”
2. Lower pitched, rumbling meows mean that your cat is agitated, angry, peeved or ready to pounce.
3. Medium toned meows and leg rubs, or meows that you can barely hear in the room means, find me, pet me, I am cat chatting to let you know that I want some day-to-day affection. Read more
